Know thyself?

Are you one inclined towards introspection? Socrates famously advised us to “know ourselves.”

I would not want to challenge the wisdom of Socrates and the ancient Greeks. But does this always hold?

As I mentioned in a previous blog post, thinking can get us in trouble.

I like what Thomas Carlyle wrote, which is in complimentary opposition to “knowing thyself.”

“Know what it is that thou canst work at doing?” – Thomas Carlyle

In other words, what can you do, right now?

There’s a place for introspection, but often we need to do.

Thomas Carlyle
